For SATB choir
Text: Svanhild Amdal Telnes
“Doctora” was commissioned by Kammerkoret Aurum, with support from Arts Council Norway (det Norsk kulturråd), and premiered March 8, 2020 in Vår Frue kirke in Trondheim, Norway.
«Doctora» tells the story of Bayan, a young woman from Syria. When her family fled to Lebanon, Bayan remained behind in her homeland to complete medical school, and also used her knowledge to teach others to save lives. This was all at great risk to her own safety — both because the road she took to school each day was extremely dangerous, and because the regime perceived her training of others as resistance work. Bayan was eventually reunited with her family in Lebanon, but dreams of the day that her homeland will be safe to return to. Through «Doctora», poet Svanhild Telnes and composer Ellen Lindquist give this young doctor, and all refugee women, a voice. Lindquist’s use of voices weaves a vocal texture reminiscent of an orchestral sound-mosaic.
