Bjørn Bolstad Skjelbred; 3 Grooves for Percussion Quintet are written with the intention of bringing some of the beats and some of the intensity from pop/rock/jazz-music into the world of contemporary percussion music. The patterns are very short and easy to get hold of, andthe pieces are written within a certain technical range, so they should be possible to play for young percussionists. The instruments noted in the score are only suggestions from the composer, and the performers are free to choose their own combinations of instruments. The same goes for the tempoes. The most important issue for the musicians who want to play these pieces, is to keep the beat and the accurate timing similar to the way pop/rock-musicians focus on rhythm; a very ”metronomic” approach to the beat. The 3 Grooves are written in both Quintet and Trio versions.
