Ståle Kleiberg: Concertos

Ståle Kleiberg: Concertos

This week, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra records Ståle Kleiberg’s cello concerto Dopo, one of three works to feature on the forthcoming album Ståle Kleiberg: Concertos. The album will be released on the 2L label, produced and engineered by Morten Lindberg.

This is the tenth album dedicated exclusively to Kleiberg’s music. Six of the albums were recorded and released on the 2L label and have been nominated for no fewer than five Grammy Awards. The album Ståle Kleiberg: David and Bathsheba(2013) was nominated in the category for Best Opera Recording, a category in which the composer Thomas Adès and the Metropolitan Opera of New York were among the contenders. When Morten Lindberg won a Grammy Award earlier this year, it was for the album LUX on which two of the three works are by Kleiberg.

The collaboration between Ståle Kleiberg and Morten Lindberg began with the recording sessions for the album Treble & Bass – Concertos by Ståle Kleiberg in 2007. The new album is in many ways a sequel to this earlier recording. As on Treble & Bass, Kleiberg’s colleague Marianne Thorsen at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology will feature as violin soloist with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.

Cello soloist on the new album is Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin. He was born and raised in Trondheim, but has lived for several years in Copenhagen where he is a member of the internationally renowned Danish String Quartet.

In addition to Thorsen and Sjölin the album will also feature 26-year-old Eivind Ringstad on viola. Ringstad is one of Norway’s leading viola players and the main work on the new album, Kleiberg’s recent Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, was written for him.

All three works are conducted by Peter Sebastian Szilvay, one of Norway’s leading conductors.

Concerto for Viola and Orchestra and Violin Concerto no. 2 were recorded in June, and now the final work on the album, the cello concerto Dopo, will also be recorded. The album is scheduled for release on 22 April 2021 to coincide with the world premiere of Kleiberg’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, to be performed by Eivind Ringstad and Trondheim Symphony Orchestra at Olavshallen in Trondheim.
