CELLO CONCERTO (Sangita) for violoncello and orchestra was commissioned in 2018 by the Antwerp Symphony
Orchestra, on the occasion of the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam and with financial support of the Flemish Community
The Sanskrit word Sangita refers to music and performance arts in the Indian traditions
This composition contains 9 episodes, presenting various “rasas” or states of mind, inspired by the Sangita Ratnakara
texts of Carngadeva
Dedicated to Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra,
in the memory of the sarangi Maestro Dhruba Ghosh
First performance on the 25th of October 2018 by Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello) and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Klaus Mäkelä at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam
