It is known as 'Café-concert' music and the repertoire spans from folk music to classical and jazz music. What makes this music special is the role of the musician as an entertainer. Each performer adds their own style to the performance by not necessarily sticking to the notes and by trying to impress the public with their virtuosity and their interaction with the members of the orchestra. Playing the original score is not important at all.

I have grown up with this music and played it as a variation to the classical music that dominates a strict and conservative Eastern European music school.

The book is not intended to be a scholarly study of eastern European folk music, but more as a bridge between popular folk music and more formal classical music. The most important thing with this kind of music is to have fun. Many of my pupils play it as a break from classical teaching.

Each piece is chosen, arranged and harmonised, from the best versions that I have heard and from versions that I play myself.

The pieces are arranged for two violins, piano (and/or accordion), viola (and/or guitar) and double bass (and/or cello). They can be played as duet solos for the violin and piano, by ensembles or by string quartets.
