DE KONINGIN ZONDER LAND was composed on commission from Muziektheater Transparant over the text of Paul Verrept’s eponymous book.
The premiere at the ‘Zomer van Antwerpen’ Festival in August 2014 was followed by 15 performances in a wonderful location near Antwerp and will go on tour in 2014-2015.
This gripping story is a surprisingly contemporary fairytale of love and loss. Wim Henderickx gave the singers no text, but a wordless language. Words spoken by the Flemish actress Marie Vinck were recorded and used as a voice-over. Four singers, two percussionists and electronics by Jorrit Tamminga create an intoxicating and ritualised music.
It is intended to be entertainment for the family (minimum age 8 years), with music that is understandable, stimulating and rich in contrasts. Ethereal, melodic passages alternate with rhythmically driving and ethnically inspired music.
In this production the composer collaborates once again with director Wouter Van Looy (Muziektheater Transparant).
